Oscar Pistorius is sentenced to jail for double the time

Olympic athlete Oscar Pistorius’s has been sentenced to thirteen years and five months jail time for killing his girlfriend.

A Southern African court doubled the time after prosecutors argued that the six-year sentence for murdering Reeva Steenkamp was ‘shockingly light’

The former Olympic and Paralympic sprinter killed his girlfriend on Valentine’s Day 2013 – he says it was an accident after mistaking Steenkamp for an intruder.

It has been 4 years on and they are only coming to the realisation that he needs to be locked up for longer?

Pistorius shot Ms Steenkamp four times through a locked toilet door at his home in the Capital Pretoria.

How can you not tell the difference between your girlfriend and an intruder?

Did she not tell him she was coming over?

I find this very hard to believe.

Supreme Court Justice Willie Seriti said the facts of the case demanded a higher sentence after Pistorius failed to explain in court hearings why he fired the fatal shots.

If you are confident, you are not guilty, and you would make it priority to fight your case – clearly he isn’t taking this approach which is very suspicious to outsiders.

Pistorius originally was sentenced to six years, despite the minimum sentence for murder in South Africa is fifteen years, but the judge described him as a ‘fallen hero’ who will never be at peace.

What makes him so special?

The six year sentence isn’t even half of the minimum of fifteen which everyone else would naturally receive.

Is it simply because he is in the limelight?

Reeva Steenkamp’s parents were ‘emotional’ as they watched on the TV from home, a spokeswoman said.

‘They feel there has been justice for Reeva. She can now rest in peace.’ Tania Koen told Associated Press.

Will this be the end of the road or will they realise that he deserves more time as punishment for taking someone’s life?
